The descriptor "Godly" is ideally used in order to refer to something with the attribute of having god-like power, such as a spell that could strike down 100 men in a single cast.
In real life, there're parallels as well.
Nuclear bombs come to mind rapidly. A high-powered nuke vaporizes the people in an area, and levels a huge chunk of a city, also causing many MANY more deaths through radiation sickness.
Genetic engineering might fall under the description of godly, to change the properties of a life form prior to being born. Particularly cloning.
You know, the subjects of which the phrase, "Playing God" tend to come up over.
The term Godly in gaming has, like the phrases "go to hell", and "damn you" in real life, been cheapened greatly by over-generalization and over-use. The idea is still there, but it's largely forgotten.
Condemning someone to hell is ideally one of the worst, most horrible insults someone would use. Now it's nothing much more than, "shut up and leave me alone."
And Godly in gaming is basically, "Slightly more powerful than most of the other crap you can find".
I don't play D&D, but my elder brother did years ago. From what I gather, the word Godly used in there indicated items or spells capable of significantly altering an aspect of existance. A weapon or spell that could slay any creature, possibly even gods, an item that rearranges a large area of the Earth, so on and so forth. I guess it caught on.
Whatever though. People get caught up over labels too often, and not the ideas behind them.

haha, good one
(btw i believe godly was originally a magical sword prefix in diablo 2, some jackasses misunderstood this, and started calling other items this, of course alot of those jackasses moved to guildwars, and now when they farm here they call their crap godly that they are trying to sell)

I don't understand why you are upset. Words ultimately are a clumsy way in which we convey ideas. Ideas and thought are pure. So what if the word Godly was used. As long as people can interpret some kind of meaning whats the problem?

i get some many different definitons on this one. Godly is used so much..an half the time noone even knows what it means. I don't know either..that's why i dont use it. I have yet to hear a very good definiton. The best one i have gotten is that godly means perfect. so then you have to define what perfect means in the game of guild wars. which is max damage low req 8. That is the best way to define it if anything. the funniest definiton i got was ..godly just means over priced for what it's really worth.LOL
